The Mission Bay City and County fire departments respond to just under 20,000 incidents yearly and cover over 23.2 square miles by land and an additional 7 miles by water. A total of 11 fire stations serve a population of 145,000 residents and provide automatic aid to several neighboring departments. The area served includes various state routes, freeways, multi story houses, and apartments, 5 college campuses, 3 laboratories, and 1 private airport. Both Departments along with California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection respond to brush and medical emergency calls in the hills and upper mountain ranges. The Mission Bay (City) fire department holds a ISO Class 1 rating.
